Academic English is a required language skills
course with a special focus on English for academic settings. The level of the
course is High Independent User and Proficient User (CEFR Levels B2 and C1).
The purpose of the course is to prepare students with the language skills
necessary for Core courses offered in the English language. The language
requirement for this course is IELTS 5.5 or B2 on placement test. The course
focuses on listening and speaking skills with supplement activities on reading
and writing summarizations that address the departmental specialization.
Students will learn key academic skills such as note-taking, the organization
of a speech (including outlining, signal words), summarizing of lectures and
readings, paraphrasing, time-management, disagreement language, verbal
description of statistics, and clarification language. This is the first
semester of a two-course series.
