Academic English is a required language skills course with a special focus on English for academic settings. The level of the course is low intermediate (CEFR Level A2-B1). The purpose of the course is to prepare students with the language skills necessary for Core courses offered in the English language. The language requirement for this course is an A2 on placement test.

Objectives:

  • Understand meaning and use information in an academic setting.

  • Take notes on academic subjects for strengthened understanding and retention.

  • Extract key information from a variety of academic-related audio and video materials.

  • Prepare and deliver English presentations for an academic setting.

  • Write different sentence types with proper syntax, grammar, and mechanics. 

  • Brainstorm a writing topic and write a cohesive paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a conclusion statement.
